Our consultation is now closed, but the rest of this page and wiki site document the collaborative roundtable process we used in developing the final submission prior to July 9.
The federal government is currently holding a public consultation on the Digital Economy. It invites:
“views on the goals of a Canadian digital economy strategy, the concrete steps needed to reach these goals and how governments, the private and not-for-profit sectors can best collaborate to create a strategy for future success.”
The specific themes mentioned in the consultation document are:
Innovation using digital technologies
Digital infrastructure
Growing the ICT industry
Canada’s digital content
Building digital skills
In response, we convened a roundtable discussion to collaboratively prepare a "consensus" submission in advance of the July 9 deadline.
Our consultation mainly targets scholars and experts in information and communication technology (ICT) policy, broadly conceived, but is open to anyone with an active interest in this field. A key requirement from all is the willingness to collaborate on crafting a written submission that can enjoy wide support.
Participation
We invite three forms of participation in this roundtable process:
1. Contribute to Consultation submission draft document via this on-line public facing consultation wiki before 12 noon Sunday May 13, so they can be considered at the Roundtable event the next day. The primary contributions will be policy recommendations, but rationales for these recommendations, pointers to useful background resources, and comments on prior contributions can also be valuable. - This phase has ended.
2. Attend the Roundtable event to be held Monday June 14, 9:00-12:30 at the University of Toronto. The work will mainly be done in small break-out groups focusing on specific consultation themes and draw initially on the contributions already posted to the wiki.
The consultation submission draft pages were locked on June 21, 2010 and are no longer editable as we finalize the submission. Thank you to those who have participated.
3. Endorse the interim submission, before July 9. The draft submission produced by the Roundtable on Monday June 14 and subsequently revised by registered participants is now available for endorsement. Go to the Endorsement page.
